Yanmar 3TNM74F and Yanmar 3TNV88F engines.

Most Yanmar engines are Yanmar TNV or Yanmar TNV  ‘C’ engines, the latter being common rail engines with Yanmar DPF systems such as the Yanmar 4TNV98C fitted to a Takeuchi, Yanmar, Doosan and many other 8/9 tonne excavators.

However, the Yanmar 3TNM74F and Yanmar 3TNV88F engines are two engines that are fitted to a few machines that ended up here in the UK, predominantly Kawasaki Mule utility vehicles and Takeuchi TB230 excavators.

These two products are sold on a worldwide basis and in the USA, which has a slightly different emission regulations, these engines have a more stringent requirement for emissions. Rather than have a product driven by one Yanmar engine for the European market and another Yanmar engine driven product for the USA market the manufacturer has decided to have a common Yanmar engine that suits all markets.

These two Yanmar engines with the ‘F’ code have a high altitude injection control device fitted which suppresses black smoke and therefore particulate matter, those nasty bits of unburnt diesel that cause smog and get in your lungs and harm you. There is an extra solenoid on the Yanmar injection pump which is attached to altitude compensation ECU. Basically what happens is that you start the engine and 4 seconds after the starter motor has dis-engaged the Yanmar altitude compensation ECU measures the atmospheric pressure. If it detects that the altitude is above 800m it actuates the extra Yanmar solenoid on the FIP and limits the rack on the pump to stop it getting full fuel and therefore limits the diesel particulate in the air.

Clever stuff that the operator has no idea what’s going on in the background when he’s driving the machine!!

It’s a bit more complicated than the old Lister Petter engines that used to leave a big plume of black smoke behind them when they started but a lot more dolphin friendly.
