In today’s environment where everything has to appear be dolphin friendly, green, environmentally aware or one of the myriad other tags that have been attached to the wonderful Ed Milliband’s Net Zero drive you become a little cynical about what it actually means. Take Mr Milliband; Now I’m not politically motivated but can you trust a man who knifed his own brother in the back with his lust for power? Can you trust a system where we close our last coal burning power station down as we are all going to die, turn it into something that burns wood pellets, give it millions in subsidies, transport millions of tonnes of wood pellets from USA where they are chopping trees down at a vast rate of knots to feed the power station, transport it across the Atlantic, load it on to trains and deliver it to Drax to be burnt!!! And they say coal is environmentally unfriendly!!!!!
Our construction industry often gets lambasted for not being green. When people see excavators digging up or dumpers moving soil around they look down their collective noses at us, of course forgetting that these bits of construction equipment are on a site preparing for houses to be built, the very same houses that are needed otherwise people would be living in tents. ‘Oh what ruffians we are, destroying the planet’ they say whilst closing their front doors and turning the central heating up a notch!!!
Whilst we all need to be aware of the environment, often companies have wonderful policies and published straplines extolling their green credentials whilst metaphorically pouring sewage in the soup, or in South West Water’s case in the sea and rivers!!!
Whilst recently at Thwaites at Leamington Spa who, for those who have been living under a rock for the last 50 years, are the world’s leading manufacturer of site dumpers, and saw a brand new cabbed 9 tonne dumper in the despatch area. I saw something written on the back and went over to investigate. As you can see from the picture they had a circa. £50K worth of dumper parked up, ready for despatch but not to be moved as they had a birds nest in it!!! Now that is what I call being environmentally conscious, deeds not words, and all at Thwaites should be given one big ‘David Attenborough pat on the back’.
Just ask yourself how many other manufacturers would have done that or would they have just pulled the nest out, threw it in the bin with the eggs or chicks and sent the machine on its merry way. So, as well as being the best manufacturer of site dumpers, Thwaites are also nature friendly without even shouting it from the roof tops. Next time you’re in the market for a new dumper just think if Thwaites take that much care about a birds nest, how much care are they going to take producing your dumper?
