Eurotank Service Group, probably one of the largest installers of fuel tanks and associated maintenance and inspections services, have just purchased another two specially adapted Volvo compact excavators to add to their fleet  to carry out work in fuelling facilities across the UK.

With depots in Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent and East Kilbride the Volvo ECR25D and Volvo EC18E will be used within Eurotank Environmental handling all tank-related work and Eurotank Installations for forecourt and fuel systems construction projects and join a fleet of Volvo machines including Volvo ECR88D, Volvo ECR25D and Volvo EC18D along with associated Epiroc SB hammers.

Due to the nature of the work and the potentially hazardous fire hazard because of the residual fuel vapours, each Volvo is specially adapted in-house at PES  to ensure compliance with the latest health and safety legislation. Two of these many modifications are engine related and include an automatic engine shutdown if the engine revs go over a certain limit by the closing off of the air intake system using a Chalwyn valve and the removal of the original Volvo silencer  and having a spark arrestor built to the same pattern as the original silencer which removes the possibilities of sparks coming out of the silencer. Before switching to the Volvo brand many years ago Eurotanks’s previous supplier simply bolted a spark arrestor onto the end of the exhaust outlet which was continually getting smashed off or was breaking the silencer pipe due to excessive strain.

PES have had a long history of modifying Volvo machines for unique applications in its workshops. Amongst these in the past we have engineered a hydraulic winch onto the undercarriage of a Volvo ECR50D to enable the machine to self-recover from rivers and streams, fitted a complete automatic fire suppression system to Volvo EC55C and Volvo EC60E for use in an underground mine and fitted a  full height and slew system for a Volvo ECR88D working next to a live railway track.
